Bin Laden is dead and everybody is making jokes about it. I won’t lie, I giggled at a few— my friends are dang funny. But then I realized something…
The devil is celebrating too.
There’s a little knot in my stomach that says we’re cheering for a goal that wasn’t made by our team.
I don’t want to be a legalist or anything. And I honestly get as much of a kick out of a good #Jesusjuke as the next guy. But I’m starting to wonder if in our pursuit to be Christians who are “real” — we sometimes— in some ways— stop being real Christians.
Jesus spent much of His free time with prostitutes & thieves. And Saul, the man who wrote the largest portion of the bible, had spent his entire life murdering & torturing Christians. He’d just petitioned and been granted government permission to go and massacre a group of Christians that He had discovered in a territory called Damascus when He encountered the Lord during His trip there. His life was forever changed by one encounter.
King David was a corrupt military leader who had a man sent to the front lines of battle to be murdered so that David could sleep with His wife, Bathsheba. And yet God refers to him ad ” A man after God’s own heart.”
If these men were in Osama’s shoes, I fear we’d be celebrating & making jokes about their deaths, as well.
That scares me.
I want eyes to see & ears to hear what the Lords doing in the lives of those around me — and I want to be apart of it. Even if it’s my worst enemy.
“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” -Ephesians 6:12
(Ephesians was written by Paul— former government-sanctioned murderer of Christians)
May we learn to see the world — the people & events that take place in it— through the lenses of the Father’s heart.
Now, for my digression. I do believe %100 that God was, is & will be in control. And it apparently wasn’t his will for Osama to be the next Saul or David. ;) My intention in this blog was not in any way to rebuke or reprimand anyone who celebrated our victory as a country, democracy, & a leader of the free world. I CELEBRATE JUSTICE. There are and were many more brave, kind-hearted, faithful servants to this country who are or have given their lives to Make sure I could go to sleep & wake up a citizen of a free country. I’m eternally grateful for that. Genuinely. I just worry sometimes… That my words and my thoughts and my actions don’t line up with my heroes: Jesus, Paul, David, John…
It’s just a verbal seatbelt check.
